YUDHISTHIRA AND DURYODHAN OF MAHABHARATH

In their younger days, both the Pandava brothers and Kaurava brothers were learning from the same guru Dhronacharya. Duryodhana the eldest of Kaurava brothers,  always used to feel jealous of Yudhisthira as he believed that the Guru was showing favouritism to Yudhisthira ( who was also known as Dharma).

Their Guru noticed this and one day he asked Duryodhan as to why he was always angry with Dharma. Duryodhan replied, “Guruji, you always flatter the activities of Dharma and give him a special privilege which is not correct. I am also a good student and you never show any appreciation for my work”

Guru Dhronacharya laughed and said,” All right Duryodhan. I will prove to you why I respect Dharma more.  I will give a simple test for you and Dharma and who so ever wins will be decided as the best of you two. Is it all right?’

Duryodhan immediately agreed. Dhronacharya called Dharma to the spot and when both stood together he said, “I am going to give you both an assignment. I am going to perform a Pooja next week.  So both of you should go around and search the entire country and each one of you should get me, 5 suitable men, for it”

Both nodded and agreed. Then he said,” Duryodhan you should go and find 5 such men who don’t have even a single bad quality. And Dharma you should find 5 such men who do not have even a single good quality in him. Both of you take five days to do that. Now both of you can go.”  Both the students left to complete the assignment given by Guruji.

After a week Guruji called both of them and told them that they should present the men whom they had chosen as per the instructions given to them. Both Dharma and Duryodhan appeared, but both did not have anyone with them.  A surprised Guruji asked, “Duryodhan, what happened? Why have you not got even a single man devoid of any bad quality?”

Duryodhan replied in an angry voice, “Guruji, Every person I thought of picking up as a good man had at least one or two bad qualities in him. So I could not get even a single perfect man for the Pooja”

Guruji now turned to Dharma and said, “In that case, you would have god hundreds of bad man. Why have you come empty-handed?’

Dharma replied sadly, “Guruji, even the worst man I tried to pick up had at least one good quality in him. So how can I consider him as a totally bad man? So I could get no one”

Guruji laughed and said, “Duryodhan, did you understand the difference now. Even in the best man, you were finding a fault in him. But Dharma, even at the worst man, he was looking at one good quality. This shows both your attitudes.

A man who will become a future king should be able to see the hidden goodness in every man. This requires a kind heart. That is why I appreciate Dharma.  Now start learning to be kind and considerate like him”

Moral. Every human being has some part of goodness. Be tolerant and kind to one and all.

KALIDASA

The poet Kalidasa of past

They called him a stupid fool

Because he sat on a branch

And tried to cut the same

Of course, he was not wise

Today the educated wise men

Pollute the very air we breaths

Cut the forest which gives us rain

Destroy the earth with chemicals

Of course, they are not stupid

Kalidasa was called stupid,

He was trying to hurt himself

But today’s men destroy the nature

Deliberately for their own interest

Of course, they are wise, not stupid
